1916 | Born 16th July 1916 in Edmonton?, North London. Educated at Latymer’s School, Edmonton, via a scholarship. |
1930 | Joined E.W. Mann, sci. instr. maker, 61 Farringdon Road, EC1, on a four—year apprenticeship, straight from school. |
1934 | Few months living rough in West Country; lifeguard at Torquay. |
1934 | Joined De Grave Short, Peckham, as trainee in Small Beams. |
c1935 | Move to Oertling section; fast progress to foreman, balance assembly. |
1936 | Picked to swim for GB in Olympics; but his employres would not release him. |
1939 | Married Ena Bridges. |
c1942 | Began making balances in his garden shed, working out his ideas on construction. At some unknown date this grew into commercial making, selling through H M Stanley. Still employed at Oertling! |
1939- 1945 | Heavily involved in MOD work on the basis of his expertise in precision weighing. Therefore no active military service. After the war on a BIOS team in Germany. Many links established in this time with research and science establishments. |
1946 | August; set up Stanton Instruments Ltd. (SI), with H M Stanley. Exact date of leaving Oertling unknown; by then foreman fine balance repairs @ No. 23 Charterhouse Street, beneath the De Grave Short showroom. |
1946 | (Or early ‘47) moved into two shops at 15 Morden Court Parade. |
1947 | May; on a second BIOS team in Germany with H M Stanley. |
1948 | Early; moved to Church Road, Upper Norwood. |
1968 | 12th Nov.; Entire Stanton group sold to Avery for £226,995-6—0. Bert remained as managing director. |
1971 | Bert resigned from board, and founded ITM Ltd at Colby Mews. |
c1975 | Retired (ITM closed?). Dedicated rest of his life to family and sport (tennis). |
1981 | Death of Ena. |
1995 | Moved to Bridport. |
1998 | Died 27st. February, aged 81. |
